I love this. Most of my favorite items are impulse purchases in the best way. That ‘weird’ piece I immediately fell in love with when I touched it and put it on. especially the random pieces I bought on vacation, from some little market stall or boutique whose name I’d never remember, but every time I put it on I remember açaí on the beach in Rio, dancing until the sun rose on the beach in Tulum, that crazy clear blue sea in a tiny island in Indonesia…
I completely agree! An excerpt about impulse vacation purchases didn't make the final edit but one of my favorite dresses I own I bought at a vintage store on a roadtrip with my friends. I didn't have room for it but I made it work because I felt absolutely magical in it and 6 years later, I am still wearing it. There is something special about pieces you are just not able to leave.
this was so delightful to read!! I too owe so much of my personal style and interest in fashion to the internet…but encountering garments in person (and seeing how people dress in the real world) feels special
loved the Fotografiska and DSM photos you shared too 📷 I’m so glad I came across your Substack; you have such a lovely and engaging writing style
I love this! Yesterday I picked up a houndstooth-style coat from a charity shop for $8. And today I got a scarf on sale from an independent store, and even though it's also check but in a different way, I just *knew* it would go with the houndstooth coat. Imagine my joy when I got home and put the two together to confirm the fact 😁 neither of them are the style I'd usually go for, but I LOVE both of them (individually and together) and I am learning that sometimes my 'impulse' purchases are my most intuitive ♥️
Love this! I feel like personal style has gotten so lost in social media trends the past few years. Couldn’t agree more that it’s been morphed into something it shouldn’t be. Also bookmarking this book store - the coolest!
Yes LOVE this! I think people are so afraid to "make mistakes" now, because then they might be off brand, too mainstream, or be deemed an over-consumer who is destroying the planet (they still exist, not saying they don't). They seek this formula you mention that can help them acquire "personal style," one that takes some work, but promises quick results. And what people may end up arriving at is just a snapshot of what their personal style may be in that moment of time, forgetting that it's a lifelong of inspiration and curation.
"I think we should all put less pressure on ourselves, we should shop less and think less. We should trust our intuition. We should embrace sentimentality. We should accept that nothing happens overnight and everything, including style, is an ongoing labor of love." - So very well said!
